Ask Ubuntu is a question and answer site for Ubuntu users and developers. It's 100% free, no registration required.

I'm very new to the Linux world and have just recently installed 12.04 Ubuntu onto my Dell XPS L502X.

Recently, after maybe 10-30 minutes of just surfing the web my entire screen will freeze. Mouse will stop responding. Keyboard will not respond. And the only way I can change anything is with a hard power off or by using REISUB.

Does anyone have advice on how to prevent stuff like this? I'm still really new to this type of stuff so anything would help!

Thanks!

When your system works fine.. Open terminal(ctrl+alt+t) and execute this command: sudo jockey-gtk and let it to scan and install proprietary drivers.. reply what happens.. –  Saur.K Sep 9 '13 at 7:36

Now jockey-gtk is obsoleted part of system. The required functionality is placed on last tab inside Software Sources. –  Danatela Sep 9 '13 at 8:30

I was getting freezes also, but they all went away when I switched window manager (from Unity/compiz to fluxbox). So I blame too much GPU acceleration! (Software Sources lists no propritary drivers, at least not now.) –  joeytwiddle Sep 14 '13 at 16:59
