I have an Acer laptop that dual boots Windows XP and Linux. For several months I used Xubuntu (12.10 I think) as the Linux OS and it worked fine. A few months ago I replaced that with Bodhi Linux, which also works fine (current kernel 3.8.0-12-generic). Now I want to replace it with Xubuntu once more and I can't get it to install.
I have tried with Xubuntu 13.04 and 12.04 (32 bit, which is what I used before). With both I can use the live CD successfully: the machine boots with no problem, connects to my home network, the applications work fine and the disk partitions are all accessible. But when I try to install, the machine crashes with a black screen covered with white text -- and it freezes, so I can't get a screenshot.
I'm baffled as to why I can't install Xubuntu on hardware that used to run it perfectly and which currently has no problem with the ubuntu kernel, firmware etc., though a different desktop. Any ideas?
