I have just installed Ubuntu 12.10 desktop to my PC (Dell Optiplex 150 Slim running Windows XP). I used Wubi installer, installing from Windows, because it won't boot from USB or CD for some reason. Ubuntu boots up and I see the orange/red screen and a mouse, but that is all that has loaded. I am new to Ubuntu, and thus I haven't got a clue about what I am doing.

I restarted the computer and got these messages:

[ 123.207462] lpc_ich 0000:00:1f.0:>I/O space for GPIO uninitialized
Starting System V runlevel[ OK ]t [ OK ] [ OK ] Stopping

Hold down the Shift key to get the grub menu (when booting). Try Advanced options, Recovery mode. The select Resume normal boot. See if that works for you. Then it's likely a graphics card issue. –  bcbc Sep 1 '13 at 5:19
