Ask Ubuntu is a question and answer site for Ubuntu users and developers. It's 100% free, no registration required.

I'm using xubuntu now and from time to time I come across the problem that memory is out of space.

This happens when I open both Chrome and Eclipse, also, even I exited Eclipse, /usr/bin/java is still running. In fact, it's running all the time while it isn't on Windows.

Are there any ways to control the memory usage of Chrome and Eclipse?

I've tried Epiphany browser but since I'm often behind a pac proxy, Epiphany isn't able to satisfy my needs.
