Ask Ubuntu is a question and answer site for Ubuntu users and developers. It's 100% free, no registration required.

I'm here to ask help because since each time I do a system update I get errors on the terminal and it is impossible for me to update the kernel to more recent versions.

Here I post the output of the command "sudo apt-get update":

and clealry the unused kernels are still there. At last I post also the result of the command "sudo update-grub":

and the contents of the file "/etc/grub.d/00_header" causing the syntax error:

Is this a virtual machine? –  Colyn1337 Aug 27 '13 at 14:52

No and to be more precise I'm using Xubuntu 12.04.3 LTS x86_64 :) –  yorsh Aug 27 '13 at 14:56

Run this command to remove all but the latest kernel from you computer:

dpkg -l 'linux-*' | sed '/^ii/!d;/'"$(uname -r | sed "s/\(.*\)-\([^0-9]\+\)/\1/")"'/d;s/^[^ ]* [^ ]* \([^ ]*\).*/\1/;/[0-9]/!d' | xargs sudo apt-get -y purge

PS. your error is "dpkg error (1) and MaxReports"

Ah man, please don't post answers with a magic command that nobody can oversee for what it does. And if you do, please provide a link with more explanation. And besides - how does it solve the issue by the OP? I don't think the apt-get purge part will work out in the state of the system as reported by the OP. –  gertvdijk Aug 27 '13 at 16:12

Go look at: tuxtweaks.com/2010/10/… - Regards –  Andrie Aug 27 '13 at 17:23

/etc/grub.d/00_header: 148: /etc/grub.d/00_header: Syntax error: Missing '}'

Quick fix: open the file as root, go to the very end where it reads set lang=${grub_lang and add a } there, so the last line should be:

set lang=${grub_lang}

Someone were playing with the grub scripts and now they have errors. Best way to solve this? Reinstall grub:

sudo apt-get --reinstall install grub*

The file should be replaced, if it's not, then delete it first, then run the command above again:

sudo rm /etc/grub.d/00_header
sudo apt-get --reinstall install grub*
