I installed Ubuntu 13.04 in VirtualBox, but I get a blank screen after the installation is complete and I log in. I can however login from a terminal (tty1).

I suspect it's a problem with the desktop effects, and want to disable them from the terminal. How can I do that?

Is the "3D acceleration" enabled in VirtualBox/Display/Settings? –  NKN Aug 26 '13 at 8:30
I think you need to deactivate background blur in Ubuntu 13.04 –  NKN Aug 26 '13 at 8:35
In addition to enabling 3D acceleration installing the Guest Additions and sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade (both can be done from TTY) may help resolving graphics driver issues. Also make sure to upgrade your Virtual Box to the most recent version. –  Takkat Aug 26 '13 at 8:57
I am working on the upgrades and will let you know. Thanks! –  malaa Aug 26 '13 at 9:43
