[Ubuntu 13.04] I pressed Ctrl + Alt + F1, logged in, and typed sudo lightdm stop but that exits out of the terminal and brings me to my desktop. I've also tried sudo service lightdm stop and it says stop is not recognized. I just need some way to exit out of X so I can run the installation file I download from Nvidia.

The solution for this would be duplicate here - it is already given in database (right above - search field). In mode of Ctrl+Alt+F1, - you need to find out the PID number of your display-manager - with command top you can see which number it is. Then quit top and type: sudo kill -9 PID<number-here> - this has final effect than sudo ... stop. –  dschinn1001 Aug 23 '13 at 19:45
