Ask Ubuntu is a question and answer site for Ubuntu users and developers. It's 100% free, no registration required.

I want to thank those who respond in my plea for advice, help,& solution to my problemSo in my brief usage of Linux, Ubuntu specifically I was testing out OS and tried to put 13.0.4 on seperate HDD attached to my pc. In my stupidity instead of install along side I chose Install that made Ubuntu only OS and it installed it on my main HDD. I need to recover all data that was "overwritten" or lost. When I run DiskDigger it doesn't show me any of the HDD's and say's "denied" when I type in /dev/sda1 etc. I am desperate to recover these file's since it was all my pic's and music. I had all these backed up but in my ignorance assumed I didn't need to have them backed up @ the moment and used the external device's for other uses

Unless you use professional recovery software/hardware, I think you did erase your HDD previous contents. –  edwin Aug 23 '13 at 3:20

First and Foremost stop using the laptop! The best way is to take out the HDD and try to recover the data from another PC with a recovery program. Chances are slim you will recover all of your data. –  Bart.a Aug 23 '13 at 6:40
