I recently used the update manager to upgrade my laptop from Ubuntu 8 to 10.04 LTS. When I tried to reboot after the upgrade was complete, I got the message
kernel panic not syncing: vfs: unable to mount root FS on unknown block.
If I try to boot into recovery mode, I get the same problem.
I have browsed the forum and seen many similar problems and some suggested solutions, but before I try any of them I want to be sure that I won't be making things worse.
I can access all of the files on my disc by booting through an ubuntu live cd, but I'm not sure what I should be trying to repair.
