My Xubuntu 13.04 periodically blackens the screen when I am actively using the machine. In one case I had just pressed PG_UP a second before the behaviour occurred so I can rule out inactivity as a possible cause.

How can I identify what is causing this?

How much RAM? My laptop with full Ubuntu will turn grey for a few seconds when I load too many apps and it has to use swap. I only have 1.5GB of RAM on laptop. You can use top to see what is running. –  oldfred Aug 19 '13 at 18:10

It's an iMac with 4GB RAM ... though it is actually fading to black as if it had been inactive. My inactivity settings are set to around 15-20 minutes, which is a time frame I am far from reaching when this occurs. –  Keldon Alleyne Aug 19 '13 at 19:38
