Ask Ubuntu is a question and answer site for Ubuntu users and developers. It's 100% free, no registration required.

Some software upgrades ran (Firefox at least was upgraded, but I can't remember any other details), and then there was a prompt to reboot. But as I was halfway through something else I delayed for a while.

Now when I do reboot, the system appears to start, but does not get to the login prompt. The Ubuntu purple screen with the 'shifting dots' in progress indicator does not exit.

Also, this is probably a separate problem, I think, but I can't get the BIOS to let me into setup mode. It insists on going straight to the Grub options. This means I can't get BIOS to boot from CD first and maybe reinstall

Any ideas as to how I can fix these problems? Any help will be gratefully received!
