Ask Ubuntu is a question and answer site for Ubuntu users and developers. It's 100% free, no registration required.

I have a laptop PC running Ubuntu 12.04.1 32 bits that crashes randomly. It becomes unresponsive, I can only move the mouse but nothing at all reacts. If I press ctrl+alt+Fn I can see the terminal, and while typing commands I get the following error messages repeated a few times:

[sdb] Asking for data cache failed
[sdb] assuming drive cache: write trough

enter image description here

On this session, sdb is my sdcard reader, but I don't know if it is permanente and I certainly don't have always an SD card on it. Also, usually firefox is running when it hangs, but that's hard to diagnose as I have firefox running 99% of the time.

I have read this article but I'm not very confident about the accepted answer as my situation (1) is not a single program that stops working, (2) the mouse still works, and (3) as I see it, REISUB is almost the same as pressing reset.

The same computer doesn't hang when using Windows (at least not nearly as frequent).

What are your specifications? Processor, memory, etc. How much disk you have available? use df -h to check out. Have you checked your filesystem? use sudo touch /forcefsck then reboot to check it out. –  Braiam Sep 7 '13 at 2:53
