I was running Ubuntu 12.04 on a Dell Optiplex 170L alongside Windows XP. I tried to update it to Ubuntu 13.04 and change it to a stand alone Operating System. Now it won't run at all. I can't even run the trial from the live cd.

It boots to the login window and when I put in ubuntu and blank password it just comes right back to the same screen again.

Did you do a clean install of 13.04 or did you just upgrade from the previous 12.04 installation? If it was just an upgrade, your password should be the same for the 13.04 upgrade as it was in the 12.04 version. otherwise you should have set a password when performing a clean install of 13.04. –  Bryan Aug 7 '13 at 3:48

I did a clean install but that won't even boot to the login screen. Then I tried running the trial from live cd and it boots to the login as described above. –  user181979 Aug 7 '13 at 17:54
