Installed the Windows Wubi "installer" last night on a new machine running Windows 7 64-bits. After the "lengthy" installation:

  1. No dual boot when restarting the machine.
  2. On Windows, no Internet connection.

I had to uninstall Ubuntu from Windows to regain my Internet connection.

Should I try the installing the latest Ubuntu using disk image and play with partitions using GParted? I wanted to avoid all this by using the installer.

If you are using the Wubi, please don't! The wubi has several problems with newer Operative Systems and is no longer maintained. If you want to test Ubuntu without installing in your hard drive, please create a LiveCD or a LiveUSB. Wubi is a mess and it's not included in the stable releases by now. –  Braiam Aug 6 '13 at 0:26
