Ask Ubuntu is a question and answer site for Ubuntu users and developers. It's 100% free, no registration required.

I was browsing the web with Firefox on Ubuntu when suddenly the browser became unresponsive, it's icon on the taskbar became a grey question mark, then the window closed. I tried to open firefox again by searching for it except it didn't appear; when I type firefox into the terminal I am presented with command not found error. What could possible cause a program to disappear from the system like that?

I noticed that Ubuntu software center seems to have disappeared also.

I am running 12.04 lts and was not then installing anything, and just browsing a webpage.

Please add more information like the version of Ubuntu you are using and what exactly where you doing when this occurred? –  Akas Antony Aug 1 '13 at 11:17

We need more info on it to tell. Applications can just crash for about no reason because it is unstable. And the launcher isn't a taskbar. –  Andrew Aug 1 '13 at 11:55

And a reboot usually fixes those issues. –  Andrew Aug 1 '13 at 11:57

Browsing the web will not uninstall packages just like that. This is very strange. It could be a disk failure. Does sudo apt-get check mention any missing packages? Does which firefox still work? –  Jos Aug 1 '13 at 11:59
