Ask Ubuntu is a question and answer site for Ubuntu users and developers. It's 100% free, no registration required.

About 10% of the time Gnome3 freezes right after login. This is apparently random, or I don't know what is different between successful and unsuccessful login attempts. I am using Ubuntu 12.04. Based on the advice in this question, I switched to ppa:gnome3-team/gnome3 but the problem still occurs. I use several desktops and laptops all runing 12.04, and the problem only occurs on my Asus N56VM.

When the freeze occurs, I can see the desktop and the "Activities" hot corner, but clicking on any of the UI elements produces no result. I can't even right-click on the desktop. Icons on the desktop are not displayed. The black bar at the bottom of the screen is visible and contains my CPU frequency indicator, but it does not contain the other icon that is usually there (Dropbox), suggesting that the problem occurs sometime between the loading of these two applets.

I can fix it by switching to another tty (CTRL+ALT+F2), logging in, and then sudo lightdm restart. But it's quite annoying and I would like to fix it permanently.

Here are the final few lines of /var/log/syslog at the time the problem occurred:

Any suggestions about what I can try?

Edit

https://extensions.gnome.org/local/ says that I have no extensions installed.

It could be a problem with the extensions instead, have you tried disabling them all? Also post your ~/.xsession-errors file. –  Braiam Jul 27 '13 at 23:37

@Braiam I edited the question to respond to your question. No extensions installed –  cxrodgers Jul 27 '13 at 23:46

It's the current log. Login-freeze occurred today at 16:04, then successful login after restarting lightdm, then I logged onto askubuntu to post this question. Now it is 16:51. The log I posted is the current one, so it is ~35mins after the problem occurred. –  cxrodgers Jul 27 '13 at 23:51
