Ask Ubuntu is a question and answer site for Ubuntu users and developers. It's 100% free, no registration required.

I'm building a minimal Ubuntu 13.04 system because of a specific need. I don't need a full desktop experience and just a login prompt and once you login an RDP session is established via FreeRDP.

I have installed Ubuntu Mini 13.04 and the following packages:

xserver-xorg lightdm notify-osd light-themes

I created the directory /usr/share/xsessions and a file named freerdp-test.desktop

[Desktop Entry]
Name=FreeRDP Test
Exec=xfreerdp /v:<IP_ADDRESS>
Type=Application

When I choose the "Test" user at the lightdm greeter and enter my password the screen goes black for a few seconds and then I'm back at the lightdm greeter.

What do I need to do to start the FreeRDP session on user login?

By the way I don't want to use the lightdm remote login feature as it requires UCCS and I don't want to depend on that service.
