I tried ubuntu 11.04 alpha 3. My unity crashes every time! I got an NVidia, I tried with the opensource driver and the closed driver. Why does unity crash every time? This is so unstable compared to other alpha. Will Natty still get an unstable compiz? I just want to know if every ubuntu machine will crash every time in the future. This will break the reputation of linux that it never crashes.

Welcome to Ask Ubuntu! 11.04 is currently Alpha so things might not work right. Please see askubuntu.com/questions/18641/… and meta.askubuntu.com/questions/871/… for better instructions on how to proceed. –  Jorge Castro Mar 27 '11 at 22:53

At first I was worried too while I had the same problem. But after few updates it became much more stable. I believe that for the release date, compiz should be pretty stable.

For now if you get a crash and you loose the window manager (the bar with minimize, maximize and close buttons), just press Ctr + Alt + T to open the terminal and enter compiz -- replace & (don't forget the &). After that you can close the terminal and continue with your work.

There's also a bug report about that problem, you can track it HERE.

Oh and BTW crashing compiz does not crash Linux by a long shot xD

Thanks I didn't know about Ctrl + Alt + T This will get rid of a few unity headaches for me. –  Reuben Swartz Mar 28 '11 at 0:58

There is still a month before the stable release.

In this time developers will work to improve stability and remove bugs.
