The import of songs from my windows server is ongoing (30k+), and when I attempt to play a song, the progress bar does increase, but for every second elapsed, it is actually about a second and a half, it seems. if i drag the track bar manually, i get a brief second of the song to blurt out, but it goes away immediately.

Is the problem that the import is still ongoing? It has been going on for the better part of 2 days now, I don't want to interrupt it, but I want to hear the music!

Any suggestions?

is there a better music player i should be using? i prefer winamp style players where i don't have to 'import' my music, but rather dynamically build lightweight playlists. i'm not indebted to rhythmbox, but thought i'd give the native player a shot. thanks! –  Miller Darrah Jul 19 '13 at 11:53

There is a clone of Winamp available, called xmms. Nevertheless, if rhythmbox does not work, a more serious issue with your sound setup might exist... –  soulsource Jul 19 '13 at 12:22
