When I open some files in Writer they open as read only. How can I edit them and stop them from opening as read only?

Try chmod a+w [PATH/FILENAME] in the terminal. This gives every user write access to the file. Probably you have to execute that as sudo. –  IndexOutOfBoundsException Jul 18 '13 at 19:24
