Ask Ubuntu is a question and answer site for Ubuntu users and developers. It's 100% free, no registration required.

I was recently messing around with my standard Firefox installation in Ubuntu 12.04 and ended up completely deleting it. Then I downloaded Firefox 20 from their site and things were going fine until one day when I needed to run an important java applet for some work.

The box containing the applet simply went gray and nothing appeared. I tested java on the java tester page and according to it, I dont have Java installed, even though I have OpenJDK 1.7.0_21 installed.

I can run NetBeans and java apps without issues. But I can no longer run applets on ANY browser, including Firefox and Chrome.

Some details:

  • "uname -i" gives "x86_64".
  • icedtea-7-plugin is installed.
  • Firefox being used is 32-bit.
  • Path of Java plugin: /usr/lib/jvm/java-7-openjdk-amd64/jre/bin/java

Any help much appreciated!
