The backspace is unable to erase the characters. The navigation keys produce alphabets.

Can anyone tell me how to fix this?

Vi (or Vim) is a very powerful editor but it's not intuitive. It is modal in operation

What you are experiencing is normal.

If you want to learn Vi there are several tutorials available such as this one

However there are other editors available. I suggest you use nano, it's not as powerful but is a lot more intuitive.

after going through some Google stuff,i came across several fixes but to no there any way that i can fix those issues in vi and use backspace as normal? – avinash Jul 11 '13 at 13:16
No Vi does not work that way take a look at this question and the tutorial I linked to if you really want to use vi. If you have a GUI however its much easier to use gedit or if not nano – Warren Hill Jul 11 '13 at 13:23
