I made a VM. I set it up with 2 adapters. One adapter is so that I have a static, and one adapter so that I can connect to the internet.

It works. I can connect to the internet, and it assigns it a static IP:

eth2      Link encap:Ethernet  HWaddr 08:00:27:0a:81:12
          inet addr:192.168.1.124  Bcast:192.168.1.255  Mask:255.255.255.0
          inet6 addr: fe80::a00:27ff:fe0a:8112/64 Scope:Link
          UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
          RX packets:656 errors:0 dropped:12 overruns:0 frame:0
          TX packets:63 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
          collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
          RX bytes:63095 (63.0 KB)  TX bytes:9229 (9.2 KB)

eth3      Link encap:Ethernet  HWaddr 08:00:27:c8:6e:ef
          inet addr:172.16.13.201  Bcast:172.16.13.255  Mask:255.255.255.0
          inet6 addr: fe80::a00:27ff:fec8:6eef/64 Scope:Link
          UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
          RX packets:669 errors:0 dropped:4 overruns:0 frame:0
          TX packets:171 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
          collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
          RX bytes:65021 (65.0 KB)  TX bytes:18240 (18.2 KB)
          Interrupt:16 Base address:0xd240

lo        Link encap:Local Loopback
          inet addr:127.0.0.1  Mask:255.0.0.0
          inet6 addr: ::1/128 Scope:Host
          UP LOOPBACK RUNNING  MTU:16436  Metric:1
          RX packets:33 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
          TX packets:33 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
          collisions:0 txqueuelen:0
          RX bytes:2123 (2.1 KB)  TX bytes:2123 (2.1 KB)

Here are the screenshots of the adapters:

  1. I cloned this machine
  2. Assigned the new machine a static IP succesfully
  3. the new machine is able to ping the host and the other VM
  4. all machines can ping each other

Settings of new machine:

eth3      Link encap:Ethernet  HWaddr 08:00:27:6a:b2:0b
          inet addr:192.168.1.125  Bcast:192.168.1.255  Mask:255.255.255.0
          inet6 addr: fe80::a00:27ff:fe6a:b20b/64 Scope:Link
          UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
          RX packets:1404 errors:0 dropped:24 overruns:0 frame:0
          TX packets:65 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
          collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
          RX bytes:127050 (127.0 KB)  TX bytes:9271 (9.2 KB)

eth4      Link encap:Ethernet  HWaddr 08:00:27:d2:6f:3b
          inet addr:172.16.13.202  Bcast:172.16.13.255  Mask:255.255.255.0
          inet6 addr: fe80::a00:27ff:fed2:6f3b/64 Scope:Link
          UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
          RX packets:1377 errors:0 **dropped:3** overruns:0 frame:0
          TX packets:264 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
          collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
          RX bytes:139688 (139.6 KB)  TX bytes:25760 (25.7 KB)
          Interrupt:16 Base address:0xd240

lo        Link encap:Local Loopback
          inet addr:127.0.0.1  Mask:255.0.0.0
          inet6 addr: ::1/128 Scope:Host
          UP LOOPBACK RUNNING  MTU:16436  Metric:1
          RX packets:72 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
          TX packets:72 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
          collisions:0 txqueuelen:0
          RX bytes:5048 (5.0 KB)  TX bytes:5048 (5.0 KB)

However, the internet will not work on the cloned machine.

I am getting dropped:3 for eth4 on it.,

How do I get the internet to work on the second machine?

Paste the contents of your /etc/network/interfaces and /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules. –  Terry Wang Jul 16 '13 at 4:52
