Ask Ubuntu is a question and answer site for Ubuntu users and developers. It's 100% free, no registration required.

I've got an annoying issue since I upgraded to 13.04 and changed my graphic card to a nVidia GTX 560 Ti. Basically, every time there's a kernel update, I lose Unity/Dash.

The first time this happened I lost a better part of a weekend trying to fix this, installing newest drivers I got from nVidia's website, trying the built-in proprietary and open-source ones, resetting Unity through unity-tweak-tool, and finally solved this by running dconf reset -f /org/compiz/. Sometimes this does work by itself, sometimes I also have to reset Unity through unity-tweak-tool, sometimes I have to change the driver...

It's very annoying, this last update I was stuck on the black screen with blinking cursor, I somehow got Ubuntu to boot up and had to do the fixing the steps again...

How do I prevent this happening with every kernel update?
