I shared a folder named #Coursera using samba on my network. Whenever I tried to open it from another computer it would fail to open and say "file does not exist". As soon as I deleted that share, renamed the folder to Coursera (no #) and shared it again, it worked fine. Why didn't it work when it was named #Coursera ?

Because a # is a reserved character. –  Rinzwind Jul 1 '13 at 11:30
