My PC:

HP Compaq
Nvidia Geforce 5500
2.5 Gb RAM

I'm installing Ubuntu 13.04 for the first time. After install Ubuntu asks to reboot the computer to complete installation. The PC then hangs when it gets to the PC boot screen. Just a black screen. I've tried to restart and turning the PC off. When it boots, I get same thing, a black screen.

This question was marked as an exact duplicate of an existing question.

Do you get a blinking cursor too? I had to add 'nox2apic' to the grub command I was using to boot to get it to load, especially w/ your nvidia card that's not an unlikely fix. – Crisfole Jul 26 '13 at 13:27

Here are the instructions on how to fix your problem:

  1. Insert your Installation Disk.
  2. Make sure the disk is the first thing in your BIOS boot order.
  3. Reboot.
  4. Your computer should boot into the Installation Disk. Choose Try Ubuntu Before Installing.
  5. Open a Terminal (Ctrl+Alt+T)
  6. Type sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install boot-repair && gksudo boot-repair and hit Enter
  7. Choose the Recommended Repair
  8. Follow the instructions carefully
  9. Reboot your computer
  10. Profit!
