I have an irritating problem which I can not fix and would like some help with.

From first install of Ubuntu 13.04, the boot time has been very long. From the Grub menu to being able to send an e-mail it takes over 3.25 minutes

See the log below:

[   33.050581] IPv6: ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): wlan0: link is not ready

        fsuid=1000 ouid=0
[  123.251812] init: bootchart post-stop process (2727) terminated with status 2

The main problem seems to start at 67.601164 when there is a huge lag of 18 seconds then again to the next step with a delay of 48 seconds then a third delay of 18 seconds when bootchart exits with status 2. and when I try and view the bootchart from Terminal I get

Parse error: empty state: '/var/log/bootchart.tgz' does not contain a valid bootchart

Can anyone suggest what I do next to minimise the time it takes to boot.

I have a Sony Vaio VGN-AR71E The 13.04 was a new install after formatting the 250GiB drive to ext4.

Update

I tried changing the graphics drivers, to no avail. The end of the dmesg list has changed to this:

[   38.196405] IPv6: ADDRCONF(NETDEV_CHANGE): wlan0: link becomes ready
[   65.174924] init: plymouth-stop pre-start process (2513) terminated with status 1
[   93.292917] audit_printk_skb: 48 callbacks suppressed
[   93.292923] type=1400 audit(1372138402.281:46):
        apparmor="DENIED"
        operation="open"
        parent=2925
        profile="/usr/lib/telepathy/mission-control-5"
        name="/usr/local/share/glib-2.0/schemas/gschemas.compiled"
        pid=2926 comm="mission-control"
        requested_mask="r"
        denied_mask="r"
        fsuid=1000
        ouid=0
[  118.042906] init: bootchart post-stop process (3067) terminated with status 2
[  128.989669] nouveau E[     DRM] fail ttm_validate
[  128.989678] nouveau E[     DRM] validate vram_list
[  128.989726] nouveau E[     DRM] validate: -12

and I'm getting quality problems with the NVidia driver so I'm going back to a proprietary driver.

With the bootchart removed I am getting:

[   37.916431] IPv6: ADDRCONF(NETDEV_CHANGE): wlan0: link becomes ready
[   59.481432] audit_printk_skb: 78 callbacks suppressed
[   59.481438] type=1400 audit(1372140857.464:38):
        apparmor="DENIED"
        operation="open"
        parent=2675
        profile="/usr/lib/telepathy/mission-control-5"
        name="/usr/local/share/glib-2.0/schemas/gschemas.compiled"
        pid=2676
        comm="mission-control"
        requested_mask="r"
        denied_mask="r"
        fsuid=1000
        ouid=0

which looks better, but the actual time it takes from Grub menu to Desktop ready is 93 seconds. The mouse appears at 52 seconds with a black background and the rest of the desktop in dribs and drabs.

What kind of computer do you have? is it a fresh 13.04? –  Alvar Jun 24 '13 at 20:19

Have you tried to remove bootchart? How low will the boot process need then? –  Manuel Jun 25 '13 at 5:57

Just reboot and I'll let you know –  SimplySimon Jun 25 '13 at 6:07
