My computer (Dell XPS 8300) would not boot (message: operating system missing) and I installed Ubuntu 12.04 in order to access my hard drive and a number of files I want to rescue before doing a clean install.
I am running Ubuntu from a live CD. In the Disk Utility of Ubuntu, my hard drive is listed and basic test deem it healthy. However, in the Home Folder, the hard drive is not listed. Also, I tried to do an install Ubuntu but the hard drive is not listed under device so I can not partition or assign it. Also, the backup app does not list the hard drive.
How can I access the files on my hard drive with Ubuntu? My objective would be to transfer the files from it to an external hard drive to rescue as much as I can.
I went through the Ask Ubuntu pages and there are issues of permission, root drive and mounting which I am not clear about.
