Ask Ubuntu is a question and answer site for Ubuntu users and developers. It's 100% free, no registration required.

When logged in as an unprivileged user, without sudo permissions, choosing an option like "System -> Software Sources" produces a dialogue that asks the user for their password. Since the user is not in sudoers, even with the correct password this fails.

I would like for the authentication box to show an option to pick a different user, other thn the one logged in to the OS, that is in sudoers, that can grant access, without logging out and back in to the OS as that sudo user.

ie. the command line equivalent of:

su someuser
sudo somecommand

How to accomplish this?
