I have an Acer Aspire 5830TG laptop dual booting with Windows 7 and Kubuntu 12.04. I was trying to install some packages, and while doing so I got the following error message:

Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock

I then ran a command to unlock it. My screen blanked out, so I restarted the system using the power button.

When I try to login I get a black screen that looks like a console, and after a second I go back to the login prompt.

I found that kdm is not installed. I can login through command line by pressing Ctrl+Alt+F3 at the login. Now my problem is how to install kdm since I cannot connect to wifi or anything.

Visit the Ubuntu Packages: kdm website. Scroll down to the Download kdm section, and select the download link that matches the architecture of your operating system, either amd64 if you have a 64-bit OS or i386 if you have a 32-bit OS. Clicking the link will take you to a webpage where you can select the download mirror that is closest to you from a list of mirrors. You can download kdm from the pool/main/k/kde-workspace/ subdirectory at any one of these mirrors.

The kdm package is a .deb file, so to install it just double-click on it, and the Ubuntu Software Center will open, and ask you to authenticate with your password in order to install it.
