Ask Ubuntu is a question and answer site for Ubuntu users and developers. It's 100% free, no registration required.

I've got a server with 7 hard drives in it. When I run the command "hddtemp" it takes a /dev/sd* path to tell you the temperature of a drive. I'd like to be able to set up my drives to be persistent across boots. I've found that sometimes the drives will change their /dev/sd* addresses. I know that udev will let me get info about the drives on boot- but I don't see any way to change what the sd* is.

Is this possible or should I use udev to make symlinks to something like hd1, hd2, hd3, etc. following this link: Force specific letter for usb drive in /dev/sd* ?

Thanks so much
