Ive tried everything he has tried - upgrading to 3.9 kernel and using NOMODESET in grub, up from 3.8, did not resolve for me however as it did for him. I have a 7600GT Nvidia card and it worked fine on 12.04 but a fresh install of 13.04 amd64 desktop has the blank screen, with no ability to change to tty. Its gotta be the kernel and nvidia driver (304) together, but I dont know the solution (besides rolling back to 12.04 or 12.10)? Ive played with /etc/X11/Xorg.conf but that doesnt help.
