I just installed Ubuntu 13.04 on my PC and am having trouble shutting down. When the right "shut down" button is chosen, the machine will restart. I have tried re-installing Unity, to no avail. I am a Linux newbie, so please be gentle! Any advice on what to try? Thanks!

Open a terminal (Go to Unity Dash and look for "terminal"), then type (in the terminal): sudo shutdown -h now, and press enter, see if your PC shuts down. If it shutdowns the bug is around Unity, else... –  edwin Jun 11 '13 at 16:22

Thank you for your reply! I used terminal to do sudo shutdown - now and sudo poweroff and both didn't work. Then I read that BIOS power management could be an issue. With a bit of help, we isolated that our USB printer is the problem. If it's unplugged from the USB port OR if it's powered off, Ubuntu shuts down and doesn't restart. If it's plugged in AND powered on, Ubuntu restarts automatically after shut down. We have no idea why a USB-networked printer wired directly to the computer causes this and need more help, if you can. Thanks! –  Ana Jun 12 '13 at 3:14
