Can anyone help me? I recently upgraded from Ubuntu 12 to 13 on Virtual Box and have had a nightmare trying to reinstall Guest Additions. Having done that successfully, I was trying to permanently mount a network drive and rebooted into a desktop screen without the left hand task bar and top menu bar. I have tried shutting down and rebooting but nothing is helping.

I'm not sure whether my previous actions (reinstalling Guest Additions or temporary and permanent mounts) have contributed to this problem.

Any help much appreciated

I assume you mean 12.10/12.04 instead of 12 and 13.04 instead of 13? Can you please edit your question to include the full version numbers? 12.04 is just as different from 12.10 as it is from 13.04. –  DaboRoss Jun 10 '13 at 2:25
