I am something of a newbie user. I am using a System 76 Gazelle Professional laptop with Ubuntu 13.04 which I updated a few weeks ago. My laptop had been able to sign into my work PEAP wifi network for quite a while, though I was plagued with intermittent disconnections. It can still connect to my home wifi from an Airport Extreme station. Then, three days ago, the computer lost the ability to sign onto the work PEAP wifi network. Today I began to explore the problem. On reading about where to look to diagnose the problem, I learned that I should look at /var/log/syslog. When I looked at that file, I found it blank. Its last modification date is listed as three days ago, which was about the same time the wifi stopped working.

Here is a partial listing of /var/log

 -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 83754 Jun 4 11:31 pm-suspend.log
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 955567 Jun 1 11:51 pm-suspend.log.1

-rw-r----- 1 messagebus adm 49996 Mar 3 08:08 syslog.6.gze

The date is June 4, but syslog hasn't been written to since May 30.

Here is a partial listing of the end of syslog.1. There is a mention of rsyslogd being HUPed, which I do not understand. If other information is needed, let me know.
