I am trying to join a WebEx meeting from Ubuntu 12.04. I can join but I do not see the live chat messages, I hear no sound, and I cannot see the presentation. I have tried using Ubuntu 12.04 64-bit and 32-bit. The one time I was able to get it working, it was on 32-bit and the sound worked for a few minutes, but then stopped; I could see the presentation, but I could not see the chat messages. I have installed Oracle Java 7 from the webupd8 PPA and downloaded all Ubuntu updates as of today May 28th, 2013.

The WebEx system requirements page says they require Ubuntu 10.x or 11.x 32-bit. Does this mean in May of 2013 they do not support Ubuntu 12.04?!?

UPDATE May 29th: It seems I was looking at the old system requirements. It looks like these are the current WebEx system requirements. So, it says: "WebEx will support any Linux distribution as long as it meets the following minimum requirements:

  • Kernel: 2.6 or later
  • X Lib: X11R6 or later compatible
  • C++ Lib: libstdc++ 6
  • Desktop Environment, XFce 4.0 or later, KDE, Ximian, Gnome
  • GDK/GTK. version: 2.0 or later
  • Glib: 2.0 or later
  • Sun Java 1.5 or later"

I am stilling learning about Ubuntu and Linux, but I know that Ubuntu 12.04 comes with a newer kernel (3.2), uses the X11 window manager, Unity is based on Gnome, and I installed Oracle Java 7. When I search the software center for these other packages I am a bit confused since there are so many options. I am guessing that my problem is not having one or more of these packages and/or incompatible versions. Does anyone have any insight on this?

UPDATE May 30th 10am EST. I tried installing ia32-libs as recommended here; same problem. I enabled the java console; here is the output:

I was able to get things working on Ubuntu 12.04 32-bit with OpenJDK 6 and Firefox. However, openjdk 6 does not work at all with Chrome: not cool. Why is this so difficult?!?! Oracle Java 7u25 does not better. –  HarlemSquirrel Jul 9 '13 at 18:16

I have tried again with Oracle java 1.7.0_51-b13 and Ubuntu 12.04.3 64-bit and things are no better, but possibly worse! With the latest Oracle Java, I had to go to the control panel and add an exception for the WebEx test site URL just to get it to load at all. –  HarlemSquirrel Jan 24 at 15:20

I was able to get it working on 64-bit 14.04 and 12.04 in 2 steps and minimal fuss: askubuntu.com/a/363400/18665 –  bmaupin Sep 5 at 15:38

1 Answer 1

I have ubuntu 64bit 12.04

I did this looking from steps from certain forums and questions.

* Install Firefox 32 bit (had to unistall the 64 bit one).

  1. goto Synaptic and select arch i386
  2. install ia32-libs-multiarch:i386
  3. goto arch amd64
  4. install ia32-libs:amd64
  5. goto arch i386
  6. install firefox:i386

* Download java jre 32 bit

  1. Download the tar for 32bit from the official site
  2. mkdir -p $HOME/opt/java32/
  3. mv Downloads/jre-7u21-linux-i586.tar.gz $HOME/opt/java32/
  4. cd $HOME/opt/java32/
  5. tar -xzvf jre-7u21-linux-i586.tar.gz
  6. cd ~/opt/java32/jre1.7.0_21
  7. mkdir ~/.mozilla/plugins/
  8. ln -sf $PWD/lib/i386/libnpjp2.so ~/.mozilla/plugins/

* Download adobe flash plugin

  1. search for it and download it from the official site
  2. mkdir ~/opt/adobe-flash
  3. mv ~/Downloads/install_flash_player_11_linux.i386.tar.gz ~/opt/adobe-flash
  4. extract that file and cd to the dir
  5. cp libflashplayer.so ~/.mozilla/plugins/
  6. sudo cp -r usr/* /usr/

I was good to go after that.

Though webex doesn't allow me to use the computer for sound. But it seems that it doesn't allow windows users in my organization to do that either. –  DavidG Jun 4 '13 at 21:21

I am assuming these steps are not necessary for 32-bit Ubuntu 12.04, but I have the same problem whether I use 64-bit or 32-bit –  HarlemSquirrel Jun 7 '13 at 12:22

My only advise on 32-bit would be to use the official Java package from Oracle instead of a PPA (just because you are able to rule that out and you don't skip the license agreement ;) ). The other thing is to maybe manually download the flash plugin instead of using the default one. Other than that it should work. –  DavidG Jun 7 '13 at 16:15

I tried manually installing the flash plugin and that does not help. This is quite frustrating. –  HarlemSquirrel Jul 9 '13 at 18:17
