Please help.. I open the software updater but after checking for updates, the machine told me that "the software on this computer is up to date"

I try to check my version of Ubuntu and it's still 12.10.. How can I resolve this problem??

This question has been asked before and already has an answer. If those answers do not fully address your question, please ask a new question.

Make sure that the Updates tab of your Software Sources checks for any new version and not for Long-term support versions only since 13.04 is not an LTS release, then check for updates again. – Peachy May 26 '13 at 9:25

Open a terminal window and enter

sudo do-release-upgrade

Goto Update Manager if it does not show any upgrade option. click on Settings...

Software Sources window will be opened. Now goto Updates tab and choose For a newer version to Notify me of a new Ubuntu version.

And now check for update. Hopefully you will be able to update your Ubuntu.
