I have a HP LaserJet 4250 network printer, set up via cups on an Ubuntu 11.04 server (running as a samba PDC). Any time the server gets rebooted the Windows clients (running XP) can no longer print.

some times restarting the Windows worksations gets this going but this current occasion the issue has persisted with no obvious cause. /var/log/cups/* does not provide anything useful and there's nothing on the Windows clients. When the user press print, the jobs just stay in their queue.

Windows 7 clients were a similar problem but as it was more pressing, as a work around I just let them print directly to the printer instead of via CUPS.

I have the following in /etc/samba/smb.conf

[printers]
        comment = All Printers
        path = /var/spool/samba
        use client driver = Yes
        create mask = 0600
        guest ok = Yes
        printable = Yes
        browseable = Yes
        public = Yes
        writable = Yes
        admin users = root
        write list = root

[print$]
        comment = Printer Drivers Share
        path = /var/lib/samba/printers
        write list = root
        create mask = 0664
        directory mask = 0775
        admin users = root

and my /etc/cups/cupsd.conf is as follows

# Show troubleshooting information in error_log.
LogLevel debug
MaxLogSize 1000
SystemGroup lpadmin
RequestRoot /var/spool/cups
Port 631
Listen /var/run/cups/cups.sock
