is there a software for Ubuntu to play audio faster but maintain its pitch? This was possible with e.g. PowerDVD under Windows.

Playitslowly Install playitslowly

There is PlayitSlowly, intended to do this (among others things). You can also save a sound file with altered speed or pitch.

Thank you,this answers my question. At the same time I found another solution, that works pretty well. VLC is capable of doing what I asked for when activating the "scale audio tempo in sync with playback rate" filter which can be found under advanced options. CU – YSN Mar 10 '11 at 12:50

VLC is capable of keeping the pitch as well when activating the "scale audio tempo in sync with playback rate" filter which can be found under advanced options.
