I have a guest virtual machine running under VirtualBox. It had 12.04. I wanted to test upgrading to 13.04, so first I upgraded to 12.10 and then to 13.04. I didn't do much testing of the 12.10 system, so I don't know if my problems began when I upgraded to 12.10 or to 13.04.
I can always use
control-alt-T to create a terminal window.
The window manager isn't working. There are no buttons to close, maximize, or minimize windows, and I can't resize a window. According to ps, lightdm is running. If I try to run metacity, then I get an error that there is already a window manager running. If I try to run metacity with the --replace switch, then no error message and I do get the close, minimize, maximize buttons and I can resize windows. If I then run unity, that kills the window management functions. If I have unity running, then starting metacity kills unity.
I have a couple of questions:
- What is going wrong here?
- How can I review the logs of the upgrades, to see if there was a problem that scrolled past me?
- Is there a "better" WM to use than metacity?
