I am working on a fresh install of Linux Ubuntu 12.04 and for some reason I cannot seem to access the User Accounts. Through terminal I am able to establish ssh connection to the root account and to all of three other accounts. But when I try to connect to the GUI using remote desktop, I can only connect with the root account. None of the other three accounts can connect through remote desktop, they can only connect via ssh. Here is a screenshot of the error when trying to connect with remote desktop:

XRDP error

As you can see, at least the initial part of the login process is successful, but it always ends with "error - problem connecting". I have reviewed the xrdp error log file, but it does not disclose anything to help debug why this will not connect.

Another interesting observation is that when I do connect using the root account because that is the only one that seems to work, after I login I am not able to view any of the User Accounts that had previously been created. Instead, the User Accounts details all appear greyed out, like this:

User Accounts

Can anyone offer any idease on why I am unable to connect using remote desktop, using any of my User Accounts (other than root, which itself seems not to be functioning correctly)?

Thank you.
