Just installed 12.04 and Update Manager popped up. Details on the error message said:

E:Method  has died unexpectedly!, E:Sub-process  returned an error code (100), E:Method /usr/lib/apt/methods/ did not start correctly.
Running terminal with
 sudo /usr/bin/update-manager
produced
requiredDownload could not be calculated: E:Method  has died unexpectedly!, E:Sub-process  returned an error code (100), E:Method /usr/lib/apt/methods/ did not start correctly
Failed to exec method /usr/lib/apt/methods/
requiredDownload could not be calculated: E:Method  has died unexpectedly!, E:Sub-process  returned an error code (100), E:Method /usr/lib/apt/methods/ did not start correctly

Hmm.. how much free space do you have available on the partition you installed Ubuntu on? Looking at the last four words of the error, at least, it seems possible that you either don't have permissions, or don't have space available.. –  gravity May 13 '13 at 16:28
