Ask Ubuntu is a question and answer site for Ubuntu users and developers. It's 100% free, no registration required.

I have a dual monitor config, and I tried to change one monitor to be portrait.

Somehow, that caused me to lose Unity and all my icons entirely. I now just have 2 blank monitors. I managed to get a terminal going and launched Firefox, so this is how I am posting this.

How can I get Unity back? I really can't re-install.

I tried unity reset-icons. That gives me this:

compiz (core) - Info: Loading plugin: core
compiz (core) - Info: Starting plugin: core
unity-panel-service: no process found
compiz (core) - Info: Loading plugin: reset-icons
compiz (core) - Error: Failed to load plugin: reset-icons

Thanks for any help.
