the automatic security update broke my mysql installation and I don't understand how to fix it. As far as I can tell the packages mysql-client-core-5.5 and mysql-client are on the same versio0n 5.5.31. But core requires that the client remains on an older version.

apt-get upgrade

You might want to run 'apt-get -f install' to correct these.
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
 mysql-client-core-5.5 : Breaks: mysql-client (< 5.5.31-0ubuntu0.12.04.1)
E: Unmet dependencies. Try using -f.

there is a MySQL

5.5.31-0ubuntu0.12.04.1 and

sudo apt-show-versions -a mysql-client
Not installed
mysql-client 5.5.22-0ubuntu1 precise
mysql-client 5.5.31-0ubuntu0.12.04.1 precise-security
mysql-client 5.5.31-0ubuntu0.12.04.2 precise-updates
mysql-client not installed

I had trouble with the install (server components) due to missing libterm-readkey-perl. maybe you face something similar.
