I'm a recent Ubuntu convert from Windows so please bear with my linux noobness for the moment.

I've got a Dell Vostro 3550 (Ubunbu 12.04 driver certified) running an ATI Radeon 6630m. I'm trying to get an external monitor to run but am having issues. I have installed both the proprietary ATI drivers from the AMD website and the FGLRX driver from System Settings > Additonal Drivers but the problem is persistent across both.

Essentially the second I configure monitors to extend and put them in the correct orientation and click Apply; both monitors randomly change resolution, one will black out, the other will turn on with the wrong resolution, then they will be mirrored etc etc. This continues and repeats until I unplug the second monitor from the laptop. This also happens so fast it makes it almost impossible to further configure the PC while the external monitor is connected.

I must have uninstalled and reinstalled drivers 20 or 30 times now. Not sure where to go from here, would really appreciate some help. Thanks guys!

Sounds like a bug. You can file a bug report with ATI as it is closed source driver. –  bodhi.zazen May 1 '13 at 5:25
Can you recommend a generic open source driver for ATI cards? –  vibrationbaby May 1 '13 at 5:58
Did you use the AMD catalyst control center for the configuration of the monitors? –  rechengehirn Dec 2 '13 at 11:53
