Ask Ubuntu is a question and answer site for Ubuntu users and developers. It's 100% free, no registration required.

So I'm new to ubuntu and I'm having some problems with the install of linux. It woks fine from the CD and seems to install but I get this message when I restart the computer:

GRUB loading stage1.5read error (took me all of yesterday to get that error message)

I really need some help here guys I don't know much about linux and I really want this too work. I have made a previous question but I wanted to make a new one because the answer that was put on there is wrong its not the HDD and I don't know how to get rid of it. Please don't mark this as a duplicate.

system info: Celeron 2.66GHz processor; 1.2gb ram; 40gb, 80gb and 10gb HDD IDE and a wireless card.

so far I have tried: changing HDD's using an older version of Ubuntu and using a program called Ultimate Boot CD (that didnt work but did get me the GRUB error)

As I said I need a new perspective on this problem and a new answer that works. Possibly explained in a step by step idiot proof manor.

Thanx for any help you may provide.
