I upgraded to 13.04 this past weekend. I primarily use thunderbird and pidgin rather than empathy and/or evolution.
Prior to the upgrade, thunderbird integrated into the messaging menu properly but pidgin's integration was minimal. Post upgrade, pidgin seems to have been integrated more but I find part of its behavior quite annoying.
With thunderbird, when I receive a new email, the envelope icon turns blue. Once I have mark those emails as read, the icon goes back to white. Perfect.
With pidgin, when I receive a new message, the envelope icon turns blue. But reading that message does not turn the icon back to white. FAIL.
I have to click on each individual message in the messaging menu to get them to go away. Clicking 'Clear' does change the icon to white but does NOT remove the list of supposedly unread pidgin messages. DOUBLE FAIL.
This is incredibly frustrating over time, so I tried to simply remove pidgin from the messaging indicator menu but all the suggested solutions no longer seem to work in 13.04. Adding the symlink to the blacklist did nothing (based on related questions from 12.10 and older versions). Deleting
/usr/share/indicators/messages/applications/pidgin also did nothing, even though I have tried restarting both
Is there any way to either fix the broken pidgin behavior or else simply remove pidgin from the menu until this bug is fixed?
