x5ives@aperture:~$ sudo update-alternatives --config java
[sudo] password for x5ives:
There is only one alternative in link group java (providing /usr/bin/java): /usr/lib /jvm/java-7-openjdk-i386/jre/bin/java
Nothing to configure.

/usr/bin/java points to /usr/bin/java which points to /etc/alternatives/java which points to /usr/lib/jvm/java-7-openjdk-i386/jre/bin/java. I'm following this tutorial and I'm running Lubuntu.
