apt-get update fails with this message

Failed to fetch gzip:/var/lib/apt/lists/partial/in.archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_quantal_universe_binary-i386_Packages

try checking for updates, it looks like a download error
sudo apt-get update
If it is still a issue run sudo apt-get clean then try it

Try

sudo apt-get -f install

sudo apt-get update

to fix it.
