Ask Ubuntu is a question and answer site for Ubuntu users and developers. It's 100% free, no registration required.

sudo has been working fine for installing applications and running scripts, but when I try and create a file I am getting a "Permission Denied". I have tried:

sudo cat > file.conf

and

sudo echo "test" > test.conf

Both are failing. I loaded the default ubuntu server instance AMI from amazon EC2, I am guessing there is some special permission stopping me from creating file? A security consideration I assume.
